Sally Saves Christmas

It was a cold, snowy Christmas Eve. Sally hung her stocking from a nail by the fire and went upstairs to her room. Sally was about to close her eyes and fall asleep when she thought she would have a last look out the window. She wanted to see Santa Claus in his sleigh. She crawled out from under her blanket and went to the window. Outside, in the tree, the sparrows were bundled up for the cold night. Christmas decorations hung all around their cozy nest.

As Sally watched the moon rise over the town, a magic moonbeam shone down and touched the windowsill. Sally opened the window to the cold winder night. She heard a faraway horn blow three notes. Ta Ta Taa. She climbed out onto the magic moonbeam.

The littlelest sparrow in the next woke and saw Sally. "Where are you going," as the sparrow. "Up there. To the moon," Sally whispered. "On Christmas Eve?" grumped the little sparrow. "Don't you hear that horn bowling? That means we have to go," Sally said as she started up the moonbeam.

The sparrow flew after her and she led the way. Higher and higher they went, through the cold night, over the clouds and all the way to the moon.

They came to a door in the wall of a moon castle. Before Sally could knock, the door swung open. There stood the Moon Queen. She was very worried. "This way!" cried the Moon Queen, waving her arms. "We must hurry!"

Sally, the sparrow and the Moon Queen ran through he winding hallways of the castle. They climbed to the top of a tall tower. The Queen went to the edge and pointed at a shorter tower with a bring spring on top. "Jumparooo!" Cried the Moon Queen.

Sally held onto the sparrow as all three of them jumped onto the spring. It went SPRAAANNGGGG!! and sent them flying off the tower and clear to the other side of the moon. They landed with an WHUMP!

There, stuck in the moon dust, was Santa's sleigh. His reindeer stood around cleaning their fur. Santa himself sat in his sleigh staring at the stars. Stuck on his head was a big shiny satellite all broken and smashed. "What's wrong Santa?" Sally asked. "He crashed into a satellite." said the queen. "And he doesn't even remember who he is. It's terrible! And on Christmas Eve!" Sally went to Santa and spoke, "Santa, let me take that satellite off your head," she said.

"Satellite? Oh.. oh, yes. Certainly, my child. Take it off my head," Santa said in a most puzzled way. Sally tossed the broken satellite onto the ground and patted Santa's aching head. "Ouch!" cried Santa. "It's Christmas Eve," said Sally. "It's what? Christmas Eve? I don't know what you mean, I'm afraid," said Santa. "You have to take presents to all the children in the world," said Sally.

"Ho, ho!" laughed Santa. "Surely you're cracked! Let's see... That would be... um.. one.. two... three.." Santa started counting on his fingers all the children in the world.

Sally took the reins from Santa's hands. "I'll show you," she said. With a tremendous tug, she cried to the reindeer, "Be off!" The reindeer leaped and pulled the sleigh into the starry sky. The sparrow flew as fast as he could and sat on Santa's shoulder. The Moon Queen waved and called out, "Save Christmas, Sally! Save Christmas!" Sally tried with all her might to fly Santa's sleigh straight. They flew over a town in Kansas and landed on a roof with a THUMP!

"Now, Santa," Sally said. "You've got to go down the chimney and put presents under the tree." "Chimney! And get soot on my suit! Heavens child! Have you no respect for the elderly?" huffed Santa. Sally pulled him out of the sleigh. With all her might, she pushed him to the chimney and stuffed him in head first. Santa roared with displeasure as he slid to the bottom.

He landed on his head and went, "Ooof!" Then Santa sat up and gazed at the shining Christmas tree before him. He saw the two stockings that children had hung. Then, in a twinkling, the knock on his head made his memory come back! "OH!" said Santa. "Claus is my name! It's Christmas Eve and I'm late!" He piled presents under the tree and scrambled back to the roof.

"Sally, you've saved Christmas!" Santa saidas he climbed into his sleigh. "I would be proud if you'd fly with me tonight." Sally smiled as Santa shouted to the reindeer, "Be off!" The reindeer snorted and pulled the sleigh into the air. They flew as fast as Santa's magic could carry them, over oceans and countries and islands and cities.

When Santa was finished, he brought Sally and the sparrow back home to their town.

"Goodnight, dear intrepid Sally," Santa said with chuckle. As he flew back to the North Pole, Santa
shouted: "Christmas is saved! To all a goodnight!"

Galileo Christmas Shows:
December 8 - Sacred Heart School Sun Valley, 9AM
December 15 - Sacred Heart School Buendia, 9AM
December 19 - Yasaki-Torres, 12 noon

FATHER -	Bernice’s father. Wears black and holds a cup of coffee.
OLD LADY	-	Wears black, with pointed glasses hanging on her neck. Wears a gray and curly wig.

SETTING:
(The stage is bare. A chair sits stage right for NARRATOR.)

NARRATOR:	(Starts spiel.)A slimy evening to you!

(Someone from the audience shouts.)

AUDIENCE:	I can’t see you!!! It’s too dark!

NARRATOR:	I need back-up! Spotlight please!

(STAGE CREW enters, carrying a flashlight and uses it as a spotlight. Lights dim.)

NARRATOR:	Is this the only thing we have? (Pause.) Fine.

(NARRATOR continues with her spiel. Insert spiel.)

NARRATOR:	A slimy and dark evening to all of you! I am from the Galileo Enrichment Learning Kingdom and I was tasked by the high chief of the ghouls to present a scary story about a girl named Bernice. But in order to see my story for today, I need you to help me. Is that ok?

(AUDIENCE nods or shows a sign of approval.)

NARRATOR:	That’s great. The mighty wizardly ghoul will be thrilled! So here’s what we will do. When I do this gesture (NARRATOR does the “Boo!” cue.), you will all shout “Boo!” Ok, let’s try it. (NARRATOR does the cue.)

AUDIENCE: Boo!

NARRATOR:	Not scary enough. I need you to shout as loudly as you can! (NARRATOR does the cue.)

AUDIENCE: BOO!

NARRATOR:	That’s great! So, the title of the story is, (NARRATOR cues the audience.)

AUDIENCE:	BOO!

NARRATOR:	(Lights seep in to reveal the stage.) By Robert Munsch, adapted into a play by the Galileo Enrichment Learning Program. (To STAGE CREW.) Ok, you may go already. I now have my lights. Thanks… uhh, what’s your name. (STAGE CREW whispers her name and exits stage right.) Can you repeat that? Where did she go? (Beat.)

One Halloween, Bernice (BERNICE and FATHER enters stage left with the STAGE CREW carrying a table with the ingredients for the slime.) watches as her father creates the most unusual trick or treat for the children who would come knocking at their door. His father gets cups and places

FATHER:	Three tablespoons of monster’s shampoo. Ick, green and slimyyyyy.

NARRATOR:	Plus,

FATHER:	Two snake’s tails.

NARRATOR: Plus,

FATHER:	Witch’s eye ball.

NARRATOR:	Equals

FATHER:	One slimy and gooey slime for the monsters!

NARRATOR:	Bernice looks at the cup. It is the grossest thing she sees because the contents looks like real worms swimming in brain matter. Bernice’s father says,

FATHER:	Why don’t you go change your clothes into the fairy costume Aunt Muriel bought for you?

NARRATOR:	Then Bernice says, (NARRATOR in a girly and young voice) “Pop, I’m getting tired of wearing pixies and fairies during Halloween so I want to paint my face and make it very scary.” And the Father says,

FATHER:	That’s no trouble for me. You just go and paint your face.

(BERNICE exits stage right.)

NARRATOR:	So Bernice goes upstairs and paints worms coming out of his eyes, snakes coming out of his nose, and ants coming out of his mouth. And she goes downstairs (BERNICE enters stage right, still with her back to the audience) and comes up behind her Pop and shouts, (NARRATOR gestures to audience.)

AUDIENCE:	Boo!

(BERNICE makes a scary gesture.)

NARRATOR:	Pop turns around and goes,

POP:	AAAAHHH!!!!

NARRATOR:	And Bernice says, (NARRATOR in BERNICE’s voice.) “She didn’t fall over, not scary enough.” So Bernice goes back upstairs (BERNICE exits stage right. FATHER exits center audience. BERNICE enters stage left with back facing audience.) and paints green brains falling out of one ear, one eye falling down out of her face, and lots of orange goop coming out of her nose.

(BERNICE holds up a mirror close to her face, places it down and exits stage left. FATHER enters center audience.)

NARRATOR:	And she comes downstairs (BERNICE enters center audience with back on audience.) and walks up behind her Pop and says, (NARRATOR gestures to audience.)

AUDIENCE:	Boo!

MOTHER:	(FATHER screams.) AAAAAAHHHH!!! (FATHER drops to the floor.)

NARRATOR:	The Pop falls over. (NARRATOR in BERNICE’s voice.) “Scary enough.” said Bernice. Bernice gets out a great big pillowcase over her head, (BERNICE gets out a pillow case from her pocket and puts it over her head.) and another pillowcase for candy.

(BERNICE checks her pockets for another pillowcase but cannot find one. She sees NARRATOR leaning on a pillow with a pillow case. She motions towards NARRATOR. MOTHER exits stage left.)

NARRATOR:	Walks do--

(BERNICE cuts NARRATOR and points to pillowcase.)
NARRATOR:	What? You want what? (BERNICE points again to the pillowcase.) You need my pillowcase?

(BERNICE nods. NARRATOR takes the pillow case off her pillow and hands it to BERNICE. BERNICE motions to show her face.)

NARRATOR:	No, no, no! I don’t want to see! (BERNICE moves away.) Phew, sorry for the delay. Bernice walks down the street and knocks on someone’s door.

(OLD LADY enters stage left and gestures to open an imaginary door.)

NARRATOR:	The lady says,

OLD LADY:	(In a high pitched voice.) Oh! How nice to see a little kid for Halloween!

NARRATOR:	Bernice lifts up the pillowcase and says, (BERNICE lifts pillowcase to show her face, but still facing the audience. NARRATOR gestures to audience.)

AUDIENCE:	Boo!

OLD LADY:	(OLD LADY screams.) WAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! (OLD LADY drops to the floor.)

NARRATOR:	The Old Lady falls over. But Bernice wants some candy and says very nicely, (In BERNICE’s voice.) “Treeek or treeaaat.” (Pause.) The lady did not move. Bernice says a little louder, “Treeek or treeeaat!!” (Pause.) The lady still doesn’t move. Bernice goes down and yells right in the lady’s ears, “TREEEEEEEEK OOOOOR TREEAAAAAATTTT!!!!”

(BERNICE waits for an answer.)

NARRATOR:	The lady still doesn’t move! Bernice walks around the lady, goes into the house. (Lights out. STAGE CREW enters and lights her face. BERNICE and OLD LADY exits stage left.) Oh, thank you. (Pause.) Bernice sees a great big table full of candy. She puts it all in her bag. That makes her bag very heavy.

(BERNICE enters center audience, dragging the pillow case. Lights on. STAGE CREW exits stage left.)

NARRATOR:	Bernice drags it across the street, knocks on someone else’s door.

(MAN enters stage right and opens an imaginary door.)

NARRATOR:	A big man opens the door and says,

MAN:	Oh look, there’s a little kid. There’s a kid for Halloween!

NARRATOR:	So Lance says, (NARRATOR gestures to audience.)

AUDIENCE:	Boo!

MAN:	RAAAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!! (MAN falls to the ground.)

NARRATOR:	The big man falls right over. Bernice says, (In BERNICE’s voice.) “Treeeek ooor treeaaat…” He still doesn’t move. Bernice says a little louder, “Treeeeek oooor treeeaaat!!!!” The big man still doesn’t move. Bernice yells in the loudest possible voice, (Pause.) Will you help me shout “Trick or treat?” On the count of three. One, two, three!

AUDIENCE:	TREEEEEEKKK OOOOOOR TREEEAAAAT!!!!!

NARRATOR:	That man, he won’t move! Bernice walks around him and goes into his house.

(Lights out. STAGE CREW enters stage left and lights his flashlight. MAN and BERNICE exit stage left.)

NARRATOR:	She sees a big table full of candy, puts them all in her bag. She goes into the kitchen, opens up the refrigerator, takes out five pizzas, a Christmas turkey, two watermelons, one hundred bottles of coca cola. That makes her bag so heavy.

(Lights on. STAGE CREW exits stage right. BERNICE enters stage left, dragging a much bigger pillow case towards down center stage.)

NARRATOR:	She drags it across the floor, comes on the porch, falls down the stairs, and lands on the street. (BERNICE falls down center.) She can’t even move. A policeman (Enter POLICEMAN stage left.) comes along and sees her sitting on the street and says,

POLICEMAN:	Kid! You can’t sit on the street! Take your bag and go home!

NARRATOR:	Bernice says, (In BERNICE’s voice.) I just-just-um-fell-fell over and just-just-just (Pause.) Please take my bag.” The policeman says,

POLICEMAN:	Ok, you stuggliburry little kiddo. Take your stuggliburry bag to your stuggliburry house and get off the stuggliburry street and (POLICEMAN motions to carry the bag.) HEAAAVVVYY BAAAG!!! YOOOOU HAVE CANNNDYYY!! (Pause.) You must’ve gone to two thousand houses to get a lot of candy!

NARRATOR:	And Bernice says, (In BERNICE’s voice.) “No, just two.”

POLICEMAN:	Wait a minute.

NARRATOR:	The policeman says,

POLICEMAN:	How did you get so much candy? At two houses only?

NARRATOR:	Bernice says, (In BERNICE’s voice.) “My face is so scary that they fall over. I take all the candy in the house.”

POLICEMAN:	Now, wait another minute.

NARRATOR:	The policeman says,

POLICEMAN:	I am a policeman. I don’t scare easy, I want to see your face.

NARRATOR:	Bernice says, (In BERNICE’s voice.) “Okhaaay.” And she lifts up the pillowcase and goes, (NARRATOR gestures to audience.)

AUDIENCE:	Boo!

POLICEMAN:	I’m a cop. I’m not gonna fall over. I’m gonna RUUUUNN AWAAAYYYY!!!!!! (POLICEMAN exits center audience.)

NARRATOR:	The policeman jumps in his car and drives away. So Bernice, drags herself back to the house. She’s having her first shot at the bag when someone knocks at the door. (Enter TEENAGER center audience.) Bernice opens the door There’s this one of those kids from high school, who’s too much too old to go out for Halloween and they still go out anyway. He had an enormous bag of candy, much bigger than Bernice’s and a pillowcase over his head.

NARRATOR:	Bernice looks at his bag and says, (In BERNICE’s voice.) “You must’ve gone to five thousand houses to get so much candy!” And the teenager says

TEENAGER:	No, just five.

NARRATOR:	“Oh dear,” says Bernice, “How is he able to get so much candy in just five houses?” The teenager says,

TEENAGER:	My face is so scary that when they see my face, they fall over and I take all the candy in the house. I’m gonna scare you and take all the candy in your house.

NARRATOR:	And Bernice says, “Hmmmm.. I wanna see your face.” The teenager lifts up the pillowcase and goes (NARRATOR gestures to audience.)

AUDIENCE:	Boo!

NARRATOR:	He has worms coming out of his eyes, butterflies coming out of his nose, and ants coming out of his mouth. He’s not nearly as scary as Bernice. Bernice says, “Nice try.” She lifts up his pillowcase and goes…

(Lights off.)

BERNICE:	BOO!

(TEENAGER and NARRATOR screams. TEENAGER runs center audience and leaves his sack behind. NARRATOR exits. Pause. Lights on. BERNICE drags the TEENAGER’s sack and exits stage left.)
